MICHAEL J. ZUBA
ASSOCIATE / GIS DIRECTOR

As an Associate and GIS Director, Mr. Zuba assumes the primary responsibility of Geographic Information Systems management and implementation.  This responsibility includes custom database design, application development, data modeling, and cartographic design.  His. experience includes providing assistance to public and private sector clients on designing and implementing GIS applications and the integration of AutoCAD into GIS for planning and development projects.  He is skilled in the use of ArcGIS, ArcView 3.x, ESRI GIS extensions, AutoCAD, Adobe Photoshop, and Microsoft Access.

Mr. Zuba joined HMA in 2002 after completing a Masters Degree in Environmental Science at the University of New Haven.  While attending UNH, he concentrated his studies in developing GIS applications for environmental management.  As a graduate student, he worked on a fellowship involved in the development of GIS-based predictive habitat models for the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection Fisheries Division.  Additional areas of research focused on conducting GIS analysis and designing relational databases for environmental and ecological studies.

In addition to his Master’s degree, Mr. Zuba received a Professional Certification in Geographic Information Systems from the University of New Haven and also holds a Bachelors of Science Degree in Environmental Science from Wilkes University in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania.  As an undergraduate, he completed research projects focused on studying the relationships between land use and water quality for the Susquehanna River Basin as part of its adoption as an American Heritage River.

As a member of the HMA team, Mr. Zuba is involved in planning assignments focused on utilizing GIS for natural resource protection, land use, land classification and other studies.  His combination of analytical and GIS skills prove to be a vital asset to the comprehensive approaches of planning and development.  He has been actively involved in a variety of planning assignments including the preparation of plans of conservation and development, natural resource and open space plans, market research and projects requiring revitalization, redevelopment and re-use planning.  Other tasks completed regularly by him include demographic analysis and school redistricting.  Mr. Zuba’s academic and professional background effectively combines the two disciplines of GIS and urban planning.
